Cultivating A Reading Habit
By Valentin Antonio Neagu, Trainee Academic Librarian Tutor, FSB Digbeth
Reading offers numerous benefits, including enhanced cognitive functions, broadened knowledge, and improved language skills. Academically, reading stimulates mental processes, fostering critical thinking and comprehension abilities. It exposes readers to diverse perspectives, promoting empathy and cultural awareness. Additionally, reading is linked to improved memory retention and concentration, contributing to overall mental well-being and academic success.
Fran Lebowitz once said: “Think before you speak. Read before you think.” This quote encapsulates the importance of reading as a foundation for thoughtful communication. Initially, I found this sentiment perplexing. When I first began reading, I struggled to grasp the meaning behind the texts. It felt as though the authors were speaking directly to me, their words resonating with my own life experiences.
I must admit, I am not an avid reader by nature. However, when I do read, I find myself completely immersed in the book, losing track of the world around me. Initially, my reading was limited to academic purposes, but over time, it evolved into a source of relaxation and mental calm. Although developing a reading habit can be a lengthy process, it is ultimately rewarding and fulfilling.
As a child, I enjoyed reading novels and romance books. During college, I gravitated towards reading stories adapted into films, often finding the books more captivating. These moments, spent reading through the night with a cup of tea and soothing music, are cherished memories. Recently, I read Britney Spears’ autobiography, which was so compelling that I stayed up all night to finish it.
Reflecting on why reading is essential, I realised it equips us with knowledge and enhances our communication skills. It is akin to revisiting school or college with a different perspective. Reading various genres, from academic texts to novels, improves our writing and presentation skills, making us more articulate and confident in our interactions.
I once met someone whose life story exemplified the transformative power of reading. This individual, passionate about reading and acting, aspired to differentiate himself from his family. His dedication to reading since childhood was evident in his articulate speech and thoughtful communication. His story motivated me to read more, demonstrating how reading can positively impact one’s life.
Reading is defined as a cognitive process involving the decoding of symbols to derive meaning. It is an active process of constructing meaning from words. Reading with a purpose directs information towards a goal and focuses attention (See What is Reading? – Definition & Process Video, 2020).
Developing a reading habit can be highly rewarding and enjoyable. Here are some practical steps to help you get started and maintain this habit:
1. Set Clear Goals:
-
-
- Define why you want to read more, whether for knowledge, relaxation, or personal growth.
- Set specific, achievable goals, such as reading a certain number of pages or chapters each day.
-
2. Choose Books Wisely:
-
-
- Start with genres and topics that genuinely interest you.
- Consider recommendations from friends or book lists to find popular and engaging reads.
-
3. Create a Comfortable Reading Environment:
-
-
- Find a quiet, comfortable place to read where you won’t be easily distracted.
- Ensure good lighting and a cosy spot to sit.
-
4. Limit Distractions:
-
-
- Turn off notifications on your devices to focus better.
- Consider reading physical books or using e-readers that minimise distractions compared to smartphones or tablets.
-
5. Be Patient and Persistent:
-
-
- Building a habit takes time, so be patient with yourself.
- If you miss a day or two, don’t get discouraged. Just start again the next day.
-
By incorporating these steps into your daily life, you can develop a sustainable and enjoyable reading habit.
Therefore, developing a reading habit necessitates a structured and intentional approach characterised by clear goal-setting, careful selection of reading materials, and the establishment of a consistent reading schedule. Creating an optimal reading environment and minimising distractions is critical to maintaining focus and engagement. Incorporating reading into daily routines and leveraging social support through book clubs or online communities can enhance motivation and accountability. Tracking progress and embracing a diverse range of reading materials further enrich the reading experience. By adopting these strategies, individuals can cultivate a sustainable and enriching reading habit, leading to significant cognitive, emotional, and educational benefits.
